Learning the 2-second rule is an important part of becoming a safe and confident driver. At Wilko's Wheels Driver Training, I help learners taking driving lessons in Milton Keynes, Newport Pagnell and Cranfield develop safe driving habits that last a lifetime.
The 2-second rule helps you maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front. Choose a fixed point, such as a road sign or lamp post. When the vehicle ahead passes it, say, 'Only a fool breaks the two-second rule." If you reach that point before you finish saying the phrase, you are following too closely and should increase the gap.
In wet weather, allow at least double the distance. In icy conditions, your stopping distance can increase significantly, so leave a much larger gap.
When learning to drive in Milton Keynes, maintaining a safe following distance is especially important on busy roads, roundabouts and approaches to junctions. Remember, the speed limit is a maximum, not a target, and you should always leave enough space to react safely to unexpected hazards.
