The DVSA has recently clarified its guidance on driving test appointments, including when new tests are released and how learners can look for earlier driving test appointments.

When are new driving tests released?

According to the latest DVSA guidance, new car driving test appointments are released 24 weeks in advance.

These appointments are released at 6am every Monday.

If you are looking to book a brand-new driving test appointment, Monday morning can therefore be an important time to check the official DVSA booking service.

However, you don’t necessarily have to wait until Monday to find an earlier test.

How can I find an earlier driving test?

If you already have a driving test booked but would like to find an earlier appointment, the DVSA allows you to search for earlier tests.

Earlier appointments can become available when another learner changes or cancels their driving test.

These appointments can appear at any time during the week, so there isn’t necessarily one specific day or time when cancellations are released.

The DVSA also makes clear that there is no official waiting list or cancellation list. Instead, learners need to use the official booking service to check for available appointments.

Should I keep checking for driving test cancellations?

If you have already booked your driving test, it can be worth checking the DVSA booking system regularly if you are hoping to bring your test forward.

However, finding an earlier appointment isn’t the only consideration.

Before moving your test, you should make sure that:

● You are genuinely ready to pass your driving test.

● Your driving instructor is available for the new date and time.

● You have enough time to prepare properly.

● The new appointment is at a suitable driving test centre.

● You have considered traffic conditions and the type of roads you will encounter.

Getting an earlier test date is only helpful if you’re properly prepared for it.
