Many learner drivers believe that learning to drive is simply about mastering clutch control, reversing, parking and passing the practical driving test. While these skills are essential, they only represent the foundation of becoming a safe driver.
At Wilko’s Wheels Driver Training, I believe my role as an instructor is much greater than helping you pass your test. My aim is to coach you to become a safe, confident and responsible driver for life. This approach is based on the internationally recognised Goals for Driver Education (GDE) Matrix, which encourages instructors to develop higher-order thinking rather than simply teaching vehicle control.
What is the GDE Matrix?
The GDE Matrix is a framework used throughout driver education to explain the different levels of driving competence. It recognises that crashes are rarely caused by poor steering or incorrect gear selection alone. Instead, many collisions result from poor decision-making, attitudes, emotions, distractions and lifestyle choices.
Level 1 – Vehicle Control
This is where most learners begin.
It includes:
● Moving off and stopping
● Steering accurately
● Changing gears smoothly
● Clutch control
● Mirror checks
● Parking manoeuvres
These practical skills are essential, but they are only the starting point.
Level 2 – Driving in Traffic
Once basic vehicle control has been developed, learners must learn how to interact safely with other road users.
This includes:
● Reading road signs
● Junctions and roundabouts
● Meeting traffic
● Speed management
● Overtaking
● Hazard perception
● Independent driving
These are the skills assessed during the DVSA practical driving test.

Why Good Driving Instructors Go Beyond the Driving Test
Many instructors naturally focus on Levels 1 and 2 because these are what the driving test measures. However, simply passing the test does not automatically create a safe driver.
Research consistently shows that newly qualified drivers are most at risk during their first months of driving independently.
This is where Levels 3 and 4 become incredibly important.
Level 3 – Goals and Context of Driving
At this level we begin discussing why someone is driving and the decisions surrounding each journey.
Topics include:
● Planning journeys
● Driving at night
● Carrying passengers
● Driving in poor weather
● Time pressure
● Fatigue
● Mobile phone distractions
● Choosing safer routes
Instead of simply asking, “Can you drive there?”, I encourage learners to think,
“Is this the safest decision?”
These conversations help learners develop judgement before they face these situations alone.
Level 4 / 5 – Personal Goals, Attitudes and Self-Awareness
These are the highest levels of the GDE Matrix and arguably the most important.
Here we explore how personal attitudes influence driving behaviour.
Examples include:
● Confidence versus overconfidence
● Managing emotions
● Peer pressure
● Risk-taking
● Impulsiveness
● Self-evaluation
● Responsibility towards other road users
A technically skilled driver who makes poor decisions can still be involved in serious collisions.
Developing self-awareness helps learners recognise their own limitations and make safer choices throughout their driving career.

How Coaching Helps Learners Develop Higher-Level Skills
At Wilko’s Wheels Driver Training, I use a client-centred coaching approach rather than simply telling learners what to do.
Instead of giving every answer, I ask questions that encourage learners to reflect on their own driving.
For example:
● What hazards did you identify?
● What options did you have?
● Why did you choose that speed?
● How might that situation change in heavy rain?
● What would you do differently next time?
These coaching conversations build independent thinking, confidence and lifelong learning skills.
Going Beyond Simply Passing
Passing the driving test should never be the finish line.
The real goal is to prepare learners for:
● Motorway driving
● Rural roads
● Heavy traffic
● Long-distance journeys
● Driving alone
● Unexpected hazards
● Real-life decision making
By coaching learners through the higher levels of the GDE Matrix, they become drivers who can adapt to changing situations rather than simply following instructions.
