How Is the Driving Test Marked?
The DVSA examiner records your performance on a driving test report. Every mistake is placed into one of three categories:
Driving Fault (Minor Fault)
A driving fault is a small mistake that isn’t potentially dangerous.
Examples include:
- Forgetting a mirror check once.
- Slightly inaccurate positioning.
- Hesitating briefly at a junction.
You are allowed up to 15 driving faults and can still pass your driving test.
However, if you repeat the same fault several times, it may become more serious.
Serious Fault
A serious fault occurs when you make a mistake that could potentially become dangerous.
Examples include:
- Poor observation when emerging from a junction.
- Incorrect lane choice on a roundabout.
- Failing to respond correctly to traffic signs.
Just one serious fault means you will not pass the test.
Dangerous Fault
A dangerous fault is when your driving creates actual danger to yourself, another road user or property.
Examples include:
- Pulling out into approaching traffic.
- Ignoring a red traffic light.
- Losing control of the vehicle.
A single dangerous fault results in an immediate test failure.

What Is Included on the Marking Sheet?
The examiner assesses many different aspects of your driving, including:
- Eyesight check
- Moving away safely
- Stops on the left
- Use of mirrors
- Signals
- Response to traffic signs
- Junctions
- Roundabouts
- Positioning
- Speed
- Progress
- Meeting traffic
- Pedestrian crossings
- Manoeuvres
- Emergency stop (occasionally)
- Independent driving using road signs or satellite navigation
Each area is designed to measure whether you can drive safely and independently.
