How to Master Hill Starts Without Using the Handbrake
Many learner drivers worry about hill starts in a manual car, especially when they don’t want to rely on the handbrake. The good news is that, with the right technique and plenty of practice, you can move away smoothly and confidently.

At Wilko’s Wheels in Milton Keynes, I teach learners how to develop excellent clutch control for confident hill starts.
Begin by holding the car on the foot brake with the clutch fully down and first gear selected. Slowly lift the clutch until you find the biting point and feel the front of the car gently rise. Keeping your right foot ready, smoothly move it from the brake to the accelerator while maintaining the clutch at the biting point. Apply gentle acceleration and continue releasing the clutch steadily as the car moves away.
The secret is practising the timing between the clutch and accelerator. You may experience a small amount of rollback at first, but this quickly reduces as your confidence and coordination improve.
Don’t worry if it doesn’t feel natural straight away—every experienced driver started as a beginner. Regular practice with a calm, supportive instructor makes all the difference.
